10 Things Men Need To Know About Shopping

So some of you may know, and those who do not may be surprised to find out that I do not like shopping.

I do not care for any kind of shopping from clothing to food.

Basically, I prefer to do as much of my shopping as I can from home, online.

I do not like dressing rooms, I do not like the lighting, and usually, I do not like the music being pipped in.

It’s either mesmerizing me or irritating me into just buying everything and worrying about returning what does not work out later.

Fact is, rarely will I go back to the store to return anything.

With that said … there are some things I think that men need to hear about shopping.

Whether we love going out to the mall or grocery store ourselves or not.

The reason I feel this is important is that in partnerships, marriages, or committed relationships, more often than not, the shopping duties fall upon the woman.

Granted in some situations the men prefer to do the shopping, but even in this “modern age” I still find that rare.

I know if I did not do the shopping in our home my husband would not have boxer shorts, let alone a full outfit to wear.

Food would be what he could grab on his way, fast food.

Needless to say, we won’t count the above as #1 which is that not all women like shopping!

Ladies, please share this with the man in your life.

10 Things Men Need To Know About Shopping

1. Men Need To Know That Dollar Stores Are Magical.

You can’t just go pick one or two things up at a dollar store.

Going into a dollar store, no matter how determined you are, you will come out with a cart full of unexpected goodies!

Even if you tell yourself “it’s just a bunch of junk”.

Dollar shops are like a magical mystery land.

They really do have some good stuff in there!

2. Men Need To Know That She Works Hard For The Money.

We work hard to find good deals to save money.

You may feel frustrated that we spend too much time in a store.

We are trying things on.

Making sure it looks good on us.

Or eyeballing things, making sure it will look good on you.

We are also scouring sale racks to find the best deals.

Usually, we are looking online prior to even getting out to the shops.

We need to see where the best deals are, even if the entire process drives us bonkers!

3. Men Need To Know That Dressing Room Mirrors Are Unforgiving.

You may often wonder why we either

A) refuse to try things on thus ending up taking stuff back.

or

B) Try things on and  still do not like the way we look wearing it once we get home.

Well, dressing rooms are horrible and chances are we do not feel we look good in much of anything in them.

We reason with ourselves that maybe the clothes will take on a new life on our bodies when we get home.

Because at home we are comfortable, have our own accessories, and better lighting and mirrors at our disposal.

Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not.

Either way, we do our best, besides most men I know do not try things on either when they even shop for themselves.

No offense to the men who love shopping, again this post is not aimed at you.

The above reminds me of another blog post you may want to check out 8 Shopping Tips To Keep You Sane

4. Men Need To Know Coupons Do Not Grow On Trees

We literally have to scour the internet for deals.

No matter how great we think that one coupon site is, there are a hundred more out there.

Women can spend a great amount of time from browsing store ads, searching the web, to visiting online retailers seeking out great deals.

Sometimes sales that are being offered online are not offered in store, and vice versa.

Signing up for loyalty cards, printing out coupons, and price comparison or price match shopping can become an event unto itself.

5. Men Need To Know Couponing Can Save Us Thousands Over A Year.

It may be a lot of work for us, but when you have a shiny new set of golf clubs, you should thank the lady in you life for figuring out how to budget it!

Men, the next time you see your lady trying to work a great deal, keep this in mind.

10 Things Men Need To Know About Shopping

6. Men Need To Know We Can Always Take It Back – well except for final sale.

Granted we may take some risks now and then when it comes to what we buy online or in store.

Most online sellers have a retail location where you can return online purchases.

More often than not, when you buy online, the items come with a return shipping label that is pre-paid.

Women take time, generally speaking, to assure that returns will be simple when taking a risk, especially on a pricer item.

7. Men Need To Know There Are Benefits To Trying It On.

Trying clothing on is very important when buying a formal gown, a suit, or something that is final sale.

When shopping for bargains this is often the case.

We are not enjoying the process anymore than you are enjoying the wait.

Alright, there may be a few ladies out there who are shopping divas who do enjoy it.

Most of us however are being hyper-critical of ourselves and frustrated.

8. Men Need To Know We Do Want Your Input.

Unless we leave you at home.

Sometimes your significant other may want to know what you think.

Other times it is easier for us to go it alone.

If asked to go along on the journey try not to get too grumpy about it.

This sets a tone for disaster for everyone involved.

No, you may not need our opinion on that new leaf blower you have your eyes on.

We do like to feel good and look good not only for ourselves but for you too.

The worst thing a man can do is decline to go shopping with his woman.

Worse yet, not take notice of the new pretties she purchases.

Even worse than that is pick at them or say you do not like it.

Your input before a purchase is made generally makes both of you happier people.

Don’t be a jerk.

9. Men Need To Know We Really Do Hate It When You Wait Outside The Store – unless we ask you to.

Sure sometimes we may want to surprise you, especially if going to the lingerie shop.

We know you are not comfortable in the ladies section of a retail outlet.

Also we know you really have no clue what style of dress we are looking for.

We do not expect you to be on top of our fashion game.

Sometimes your expression alone is helpful.

Those subtle clues that women are excellent at picking up on can really help our buying decisions.

Truth be told, sometimes we are just as clueless as you are!

10. Men Need To Know Malls can be fun! Yes I said it.

As much as I personally do not like to go shopping out in the world, there are fun things to see and do out there!

There are often pop up shops outside of the mall offering unique wood crafted items, helicopters, and these days even drones!

Also you can always go look at the BBQ Grills or tools at sears as your reward for being a patient and happy shopper sidekick!

Sure this article may seem a little dated, or sexist.

Yet from my experience as a midlife woman, most of these things still ring true, more often than not!

I have eased my man into fashion and shopping to some degree, but even still he balks at the idea of shopping most of the time.

Still, he understands these 10 tips and does his best to remember them, even if I have to give him a gentle nudge now and then.

Better yet, these days he does ask me my opinion on those leaf blowers, and other things guys buy.

Guys, let me know what you think.

Ladies do you have any other tips for the guys?

Leave me a comment and let us all know!

This post made me smile! I too love dollar stores. I find some many great items for gift baskets there. I agree with you about the mirrors in stores. I am super pale and they make me look even paler.

OMG me too on being pale! LOL you are so right! How can anything look good in those dressing rooms? It seems they would increase sales if they fixed that!

I’m with you on shopping and so my husband does nearly all of it for us. I know(!) he’s a gift from the heavens. It’s crazy how much money it saves us because he always goes with a list, and never wanders through the pretty fall sweaters or super cool jeans. I had no idea how much money I was spending just on impulse buys. x

    • November 20, 2017 / 9:09 pm

Lucky lady you are haha! I bet he does save you a lot of cash since he probably does not get as distracted. My husband – he is not great with shopping as he wanders into the hardware departments lol

  3. November 20, 2017 / 7:19 pm

Honestly, I don’t have other tips because my husband is pretty cool. He’s laid back and I just tell him what I want/need. #5 on your list piqued my interest. I’ve just started using some money saving apps and it’s impressive how much money I get back, but I am nowhere near the thousands of dollars range when it comes to couponing. I’d love to get there, though!

    • November 20, 2017 / 9:09 pm

Oh I am no where as good with coupons as I could be if I made more effort. I should make more effort. I am hearing a lot of husbands are pretty good with wives spending and even doing the shopping! Time to go talk to my husband lol

  4. November 20, 2017 / 11:01 pm

Yes, to all of this. I dont shop often but when I do , I don’t like to be rushed. And I’m using the coupon if thete is one.

    • November 21, 2017 / 10:00 am

Yes Jenn!! Absolutely! We have to save where we can that’s for sure! I agree about not being rushed. I am pretty fast all on my own but shopping with someone who is impatient is no fun.

  5. November 21, 2017 / 10:27 am

Great tips for men. Thanks for sharing.. I guess now I can impress girls.

  6. November 21, 2017 / 12:14 pm

Great tips for those men out there. My husband is not a big shopper at all. He is perfectly fine with me going shopping for him, makes everyone a lot happier Shopping is therapy for me. I love going to a store to just look at items.

    • November 21, 2017 / 12:57 pm

Thank you Censie! I actually had a nice time shopping the other night. The mall was not busy at all since it was close to closing time. I found a new tea shop had opened up which was wonderful. I imagine it can be therapeutic depending on the store. Some are just too busy or the music gets to me. Some are rather lovely though.

  7. November 22, 2017 / 5:32 am

Haha, indeed the trip to the mall can be quite daunting on the men. My ex wasn’t a fan of it either but he was generally cool. Anyhow, these are really great tips and infos that they should know and that basically everyone should know haha.

    • November 22, 2017 / 10:17 pm

Thank you Aileen! I really appreciate that! I think anything we can do to understand each other helps.

  8. November 22, 2017 / 9:28 pm

Hahaha I’m so with you on this post. I too prefer online shopping. I’d do my grocery shopping online if it was an option in my area. It’s funny because I’m a fashion blogger and whenever I visit my sister, she always thinks it’s fun to bring me along with her to pick pieces out for her. And yes, dollar stores are magical.

    • November 22, 2017 / 9:48 pm

Yup! So happy we have online shopping these days!! Now, I do like to shop speciality stores now and then – just try to mostly stay away from large crowded malls.
Oh indeed! I bet your sister loves to get your input!!
      Cheers to Dollar Stores!! 🙂
