Understanding Amazon Clothing Size Charts

When shopping for fashions on Amazon one could become confused, if not irritated.

Understanding Amazon Size Charts

Size charts on Amazon are not always accurate. On the drop-down menu where you would select your size for an item, the choices are often confusing.

Normally we would see a listing of XS to XL or XXS to XXL and so on. This is not always the case on Amazon. Some brands list size L as a USA 8 for example. We all know that a size 8 is not a Large in the USA. I wear medium to large in shirts, depending on the style, and I am at least a size 10 upward to a 14 for button up tops.

If you see an item listed as a size 8 for US Large, do not get discouraged immediately! Amazon has a strange algorithm for sellers. From my communication with Amazon sellers, the drop down menus are not fully configurable on the seller end.

Sellers have to select a sizing drop down menu that best reflects their sizing, but it is not perfect.

Sometimes the seller is not aware of this so no other sizing information is available.

In this case, you have two options. Buy the item and hope for the best, or skip it entirely.

However, most sellers are aware of this being an issue for the buyers and will place complete sizing information in two different areas.

One area in which you may find more accurate sizing information is in the photos on the left side of the screen right next to the main listing image.

Another place you can find more detailed information would be within the item description itself. You will have to scroll down beneath the images to the item details to find this.

Understanding Amazon Size Charts And Where To Find Them

Not all Amazon size charts are inaccurate.

Sellers that manufacture items in the USA are usually correct in their drop down menus.

Big name items are generally accurate on sizing as well.

Even so, it is better to double check within the photos on the side of the main image or check the detailed description. Even in the USA sizing from one brand to the next can be different.

I enjoy shopping on Amazon for fashion. Some of my best deals come from there. Having Amazon Prime free 2 day delivery on items that offer it is a wonderful benefit too. I also appreciate the ease of returning items.

I totally need to save this, I find their sizing charts so confusing and more than once I’ve ended up with completely the wrong size! Whoops!

I haven’t really ordered many clothing items off of Amazon. It is important to look at the sizing details before making the purchase. If all else fails, ask the seller to verify sizes so that you aren’t stuck with an item that you can’t wear or have to deal with returning it.

Great point! Yes contacting the seller when in doubt is the best option. I do love having Amazon Prime. It makes returns SO much easier.

This is super helpful! I order tons of clothes from Amazon and I always try to go by their measurements in the description instead of the size chart since they are different sometimes. But returning things are always super easy if you need to!

Oh yes that is one thing I love about Amazon – at least with Prime, the returns are super simple!

This is the main reason I haven’t really been brave enough to buy a lot of clothing from Amazon yet. Might be time to give it a shot now.

    • April 5, 2017 / 10:47 pm

I sure hope it helps Gabriel! I know it was a lifesaver for me once I learned about it!

These are great tips for understanding Amazon size charts. I know I usually read the review from people to to find out if items fit a certain way. Thanks for sharing the tips.

    • April 6, 2017 / 11:15 am

Indeed the reviews can be super helpful too – especially when they give thei own measurements and show pictures of how things fit.

One of the worst experiences shopping online is to get a piece that doesn’t fit and you have to send it back. This chart will help me order with more confidence.

    • April 7, 2017 / 12:20 am

Agreed! I hate having to send things back! Even with Amazon prime which makes it easy, it’s just frustrating!
I am glad to be able to help a little so you do not have these issues.

My last return was due to them sending the wrong size entirely.

  11. April 11, 2017 / 7:24 am

i love shopping online for other items but for clothes and shoes it’s not included in the list

    • April 11, 2017 / 11:24 am

I hear you – too many frustrations sometimes but at the same time I also hate busy malls lol

    • April 11, 2017 / 11:22 am

So true! It’s never EASY online or in store for that matter so every little bit of info helps.

  12. April 21, 2017 / 2:59 am

Exactly what I was looking for. I hate returning clothes (Specially the ones which I really like but dont fit me )
