10 Easy Activities In Honor Of Earth Day

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 22nd is Earth Day.

Earth Day is celebrated every year and generally has a theme.

This year the theme is environmental and climate literacy.

Earth Day

I think it is wonderful to teach our children, and educate ourselves on ways in which we can improve our world.

In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to share with you all ten easy changes we all can make to in our lives, to make our world a better place.

10 Easy Changes You Can Make In Honor Of Earth Day

1. Plant A Tree

Planting a tree is a wonderful way to spend a day together as a family. If you have younger children that tree will grow up as they do. They will always remember planting it. Trees provide us oxygen which is, of course, a wonderful thing. They also look beautiful.

2. Recycle

We are all about recycling in our family. We barely have any trash. It is easier of course if you have curbside service like we do. Even when we didn’t we took as much as we could to the recycling bins at our local store. Granted, not everyone has as much storage space but this is one way that you can make a big impact on the environment.

3. Turn off lights when not in use.

This is a pet peeve for many mothers around the world. I heard it when I was a child “Turn off those lights!”. Leaving lights on that are not necessary or being used can not only be bad for our earth but will also run up that energy bill. This is an easy thing to do, once you get the family trained.

4. Turn off the television when no one is watching.

Okay, I am guilty of this one. I leave it on for my pets when I leave home. I also enjoy having some background noise while working. I will be working on this one and have already started. Since we do not have any heat or air conditioning on yet this year I leave the doors open for a lovely breeze. The sounds of nature are enjoyable over the noise of the television.

5. Use less water when showering, brushing teeth or washing dishes.

When brushing your teeth turn the water off instead of letting it run. You can also do the same if you hand wash your dishes the way I do. My Grandmother always had a wash basin and a rinse basin. I always felt that was a little unsanitary (sorry grandma). So I wash all of my dishes leaving the water off. Then rise quickly. I think most of us would agree, we could all take shorter showers.

What A Beautiful World

6. Take your own bags to the grocery store.

This is a super easy way to help mother earth and the initial cost is very little. Most reusable shopping bags can be purchased for only one dollar each. It does take a little time if you are dimwitted like myself, you will leave those bags at home a few times, or in the car. You will get the hang of it though and you will feel better for doing it!

7. Carpool

Carpooling is a wonderful way to save gas (money) and our planet! Carpooling cuts down on the emissions we put out into the earth. If you like your coworkers it is also a good way to spend more time with them. Carpooling can give you more free time on the way to work because you won’t always be the one driving.

8. Read your favorite magazines online.

Instead of subscribing to your favorite magazines, switch to reading them digitally! Magazines are available online so you can read them on your tablet, Nook, Kindle, or your phone!

9. Repair leaky faucets.

This one is easier than you think and with the power of Google, you can repair those leaky faucets yourself. Or you can hire the family plumber. Maybe you are lucky and have one in the family! Not only will this help the planet, but it will save you more money than you realized too!

10. Inform others on how to help our planet earth.

Spreading the word and getting useful suggestions out there for others helps a lot! Share what you know with your friends, neighbors, and family.

Most of the time I am a live and let live person. I keep to myself and do not mind what others do as long as they harm none.

The thing is, the planet is my business, it’s our business!

Please leave a comment and let me know your tips for saving our planet! I would love to hear them.

This is a great list of things to do for Earth Day. We planted flowers for the Bees so they can have a good meal as they wake up.

Oh my, I completely forgot today was Earth Day! It’s snowing and raining here, but usually I love finding local 5K runs or cleaning groups to go help out and think I’m going to have to stay in today.

Don’t use plastic sandwich bags for school lunches. You can buy fabric zippered bags and wash them every day.

Such great reminders! We do those things except for the magazines. I need to work on reading them online rather than subscribing to them.:)
