A New Wholesome Grain Free Pet Food American Journey By Chewy.com

I have been a customer and ambassador for Chewy.com for awhile now so when I learned that they came out with their own brand of dog food, American Journey, I was excited! I knew it would be a quality product.

Disclosure: As part of the Chewy.com Blogger Program, and a Chewy Influencer, I received free product and or payment to facilitate this article. I am highly selective on products for my pets and I would only showcase items I trust, from brands I trust.

Chewy.com has been like a part of our family and I know when I shop on their website I am getting products I trust for my pets.

When asked if I would like to try, or if our Lyla would like to try their American Journey Dog food, I happily agreed!

Within 2 days the American Journey dog food had arrived at our doorstep! That is one thing I love about Chewy.com, super fast shipping! They must have flying monkeys delivering for them!

American Journey Dog food Fast Delivery!

American Journey dog food comes in four flavors:

Salmon & Sweet Potato, Lamb & Sweet Potato, Beef & Sweet Potato, and Chicken & Sweet Potato. I selected the Salmon since our Lyla loves fish, and begs more than usual when we have fish for dinner.

American Journey is also available for puppies and large breed dogs.

At the time of this posting, you can get your first bag for 50% off on Chewy.com which is a great deal!

We just received the bag today so I am learning about American Journey as I tell you about it. I will have two follow-up posts. The second article will tell you how it is working for Lyla so far. The third will let you know my overall thoughts and feelings.

Lyla Begs for American Journey Dog Food!

Immediately Lyla began to give us that forlorn look. We knew she was saying “Please Mom, Dad, open that bag!!

Lyla can smell the goodness of American Journey dog food in the air!

So open it we did, and we could see she was smelling the air right away!

American Journey dog food, so flavorful Lyla tastes it in the air!

We already knew that American Journey was going to be a dog food Lyla loved, she was tasting it in the air!

Lyla Nose Deep in her bowl of American Journey Dog Food

I do not think I have ever seen Lyla so nose deep into her bowl!

According to the details about American Journey on Chewy.com, key benefits are:

Being free of grain, wheat, corn, and soy help dogs with sensitive stomachs. Lyla does have a sensitive tummy!

American Journey is better for your pet’s immune support system because it is packed with fruits and berries. Blueberries, carrots, and dried kelp are all good for the immune system and phytonntrients.

It contains deboned salmon that is full of amino acids. Amino acids help maintain lean muscle mass.

Salmon oil and flaxseed provide omega-3 and 6 fatty acids that help your pet’s skin and coat. This is something Lyla really needs since she has dry flaky skin. These nutrients also help brain and eye development.

American Journey also includes fiber-rich chickpeas, and sweet potato to give your pup tons of energy for adventure!

Lyla approves of American Journey dog food from Chewy.com

We can safely say, Lyla approves of American Journey dog food! She gobbled up every last bit!

So now the test is to see how her tummy adapts to it. If she continues to love it as much as she did today. Or maybe she gobbled it up simply because it was a new flavor. We shall see!

I am also curious to see how her skin and coat react to this new food. I know that fish oils are great for the skin. Lyla has a very obvious spot down the middle of her back, right below her neck where her skin is terrible. This is my test patch to see if Amerian Journey improves it.

Another thing I am loving about American Journey dog food is that it is made in the U.S.A.!

I think the smile on Lyla’s face says it all! Lyla was quite satisfied with her first taste of American Journey dog food. I am excited to see how she does on it for the next two weeks.

My pet loving readers want only the best for their pets. I feel the same way! There are a lot of choices out there. I am one of those people who reads the labels. I question where pet food and other products are made.

Chewy.com wanted me (Lyla) to try the product for a full month before making our final call on their new pet food. They honestly, truly care. They want to provide the best quality, nutrition, and flavor to our pets.

That is what I want for all of our pets too!

I will keep you all updated!

Until the next update, check out American Journey at Chewy.com

Thank you so much. We have some giant goldfish and we take good care of them as well. I love all animals dearly. What do you feed your fish? I often wonder if mine would like something different.

Lyla is so cute, and you capture her brilliantly with your lens! I order from Chewy.com often. My dos is super picky…it took me forever to find a food she would eat. But it’s good to know that Chewy is producing a high quality, grain-free food!

It concerns me that Chewy will not disclose who the manufacturer is and only saying that it’s a third-party. A lot of people are passing on this food because of it. I am more or less one of them. I have done weeks of research trying to switch my 3 dogs from Merrick because I need something a little more friendly on the wallet. I go through 100 lbs of food a month and I just cannot comfortably afford $215+ a month anymore. I have ordered from Chewy many times and I do love their prices and their customer service, but I just cannot get over the fact that the food manufacturer is being hidden. We are all aware of the companies with bad reputations and it makes me feel like this is one of them trying to build their name back up.

    • March 27, 2017 / 12:14 pm

      Danica,

I emailed my contact at Chewy.com and here is their reply:

      Hi Joely,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. American Journey is manufactured through a third-party facility so any information such as their name, for example, belongs solely to them. Because of this, we’re unable to share the facility’s name due to their independent ownership. I apologize about this. However, I can confirm that the facility is in Kansas and has rigorous quality systems in place to manage food safety risks and provide safe products. Also, they have current Hazard Analysis Critical Control Plan (HACCP) in place, received SQF Level 3 certification, and performs continuous quality checks on the food. We’ve received great feedback from these formulas, and it was even rated 5 stars on Dog Food Advisor. I even feed these formulas to my pups at home. Please let me know if you have any questions.

      Thanks,

      Natalie

I agree, along with numerous others on Forums found on GOOGLE, that I will not buy from some organization who is afraid to divulge something so simple as to which company makes this food. Any “brand” can make claims, but without all the needed info, how do we know what grade beef or any other ingredient really is? Sorry, I’ll keep passing until Chewy wants to fess up and release what the maker is scared of.

        • April 1, 2017 / 1:16 pm

Wayne, even if you knew the processing plant that made the food (company as you put it) that does not mean you will ever know the recipe. Recipes are kept secret for a reason, so other dog food brands can not copy it. Even if you knew the company / processing plant how would you know the grade of meats used?

You see one processing plant can make 20 different BRANDS of dog food but each BRAND tells that plant the recipe (grade of meat) to use.

There for I am not sure I understand how knowing which plant makes it can make a difference.

Can you perhaps shed some light on this for me? How do, or I, as a consumer find this information out?

I am seriously curious since I DO care what I feed my pets.

I also care what I personally feed myself and my family but let’s face it, there is always risk!

Unless we go to a diet of only eating what we grow and kill (if we hunt) then there is no way of knowing the quality of any of our food 100%.

Even then, if we did plant and hunt for all our own food, we risk environmental elements that can harm or kill us.

I want the best for my pets – truly I do. I am willing to pay more for that but there are reasonable limits.

I feel either A) some people know more than is truly “Divulged” somehow in some mysterious way. OR B) people just like to incite issues where none exist.

We all know that dog foods, and cat foods, have poisoned and killed our beloved pets.

The same has happen to humans as well through food. Yet we still eat the same foods that have killed people.

Even those that cook and prepare their own dog foods at home in their own kitchens risk their pets health on some level as any raw meats they purchase even from a local butcher can be tainted.

I would just like more information or clarity as I do not claim to know everything.

          Thank you.

Does Orijen make “numerous” brands at their plants? Or “Blue Buffalo” at their plants, do they make food for Purina? No, these and other top line foods make just their own and PRINT the company that makes the food on the bag,

Now, how about “Diamond” brand dog food. How many animals have they killed putting bad products out there? They are trying to change their image with a new line sure, but they do let the consumer know it is their product.

As I stated, I agree with so many other owners on Forums out there that if this Company is scared to tell the public who they are, I WILL NOT FEED THEIR PRODUCT TO MY BEST FRIENDS. Even though the “processing plant” might have a very clean record, it says nothing about the suppliers where they get their initial product from.

So, now you tell me, do you find it not strange that the “MAKERS” of this product are afraid to let the public know who they and their suppliers are? If the “MAKERS” are so proud of this product. why not brag to the consumers? So, what are they hiding from the consumer? Until all this comes to light, I’m sorry, but I will not feed this to my best friends.

Well, since you are a “paid spokesperson”, let me start by answering your question about “processing plants”. To start with, ALL food does not come from a few plants in this Country. makers such as ORIJEN and other own their plants where their food is made. Along with BOASTING who and where their suppliers are and the quality of these products. Unlike some foods who say they own their own plants and follow government guidelines at these plants, they say nothing about their suppliers or the quality of those supplies.

One way to find these things out, is to write, e-mail, or call these QUALITY food processors, since they are proud to let the consumers know who they are and the quality of their products. Secondly, there are all sorts of forums out there where caring people talk about the foods out there, without being paid. Third, I get a e-mail notification everytime, no matter who’s product it is, when there is a recall and it usually says what the recall is for. Granted, luckily most are not from my area, but I post these recalls on FB so hopefully all owners will get a chance to see them.

So, no, there is no “mysterious way” of knowing. Just plain old fashioned research that anyone can find on the web who wants to take the time out to research a product, unless there is some “mysterious” reason that a company does not want to divulge information to the public.

I’ll close these with these answers to your questions, unlike your company, by saying that yes, dogs, cats, horses, people have all been killed by tainted food. But, when the public finds out the reason, they usually stop buying from that company or, in some cases, actually seek legal recourse. Also, I’d like to bring out, that there are other home delivery options out there with free shipping that has food that the maker and who the suppliers are, are printed on the bag for not much more than the cost of this, as you put it, “mystery product”.

    • April 1, 2017 / 3:50 pm

Wayne – I was not paid to write the post.

      Chewy.com is not “my” company.

I did not refer to American Journey as a “mystery product”.

The truth is my dog liked the food, I saw positive changes in her behavior, healthy, skin, coat, etc after starting her on it.

Also I never said ALL food comes from a few plants. I SAID that a plant CAN make 20 types of dog food which IS true, and SOME do, and this was only for example. Not gospel.

I just discovered this food today. I’m looking for another quality food for our dogs to add to our rotation. I accidentally came across this food. For a 5 star food, this is a really good value. Found your post in the process, thanks for the review.

    • May 8, 2017 / 4:38 pm

Thank you I am so happy you came across my blog. I really love the healthy ingredients in American Journey. I am sure your pups will love it too.

  12. June 17, 2017 / 8:33 am

I am a long time Chewy customer. When i saw the American Journey offer of 50% off the first bag I checked them out. I saw the 5 star review at Dog Advisor and decided to give them a try. I had been using Taste of the Wild for years, and other than one-time when I got a bad bag my dogs had done great with that brand so i was reluctant to switch.

When I compared ingredients the AJ was pretty similar to the TOTW.

The biggest difference that i noticed was that the AJ smelled much fresher than does the TOTW when I open a bag. Lyla seemed to notice that as well. I am on about my fourth or fifth bag since I switched. My three dogs (two senior) are doing great on that brand.

So, it seems to me that all things being relatively equal on the ingredient factor, I give AJ the edge over TOTW on the freshness factor.

Truthfully, at the time I tried AJ I was unaware of the “hidden” plant issue. Had I known then I might not have tried the brand, but now, as long as i continue to get good results with my dogs in terms of appetite, freshness, coat, and health i will stay with it.

    • June 17, 2017 / 4:54 pm

I too was unaware that they did not disclose the plant where the product is made, other than it is here in Kansas where I live. Truth be told, I rarely look into such things anyway. My husband works in a food processing plant and they all are under such strict guidelines if a problem does exist it comes from the products shipped to them more so than issues in the plant itself. Luckily the plant in which my husband works is very tightly controlled and there are never issues BUT I can see the concern – especially where our pets are concerned. It is funny but it seems us pet parents are more concerned about where our pet foods are processed than where our human for or food for our kids comes from!
Regardless I am glad you gave it a try before knowing about the plant situation.
Your dogs could have missed out on a great thing indeed.
You are so right – that fresh smell is pretty amazing isn’t it!
I will still give other foods a try now and then – I do not like switching Lyla too often as it is not healthy for a dog to switch all of the time but so far American Journey Dog Food has done very well for her, she loves it, and her skin and coat are so much better than before she tried it!
Thank you for your comment, Jeff!

I have two dogs in my house that currently eat “Taste of the Wild”. I decided to look for a different food for our new baby “Tank”, he is a 5 month old Golden Retriever puppy. I purchased the American Journey Chicken and Sweet Potato Puppy food. Tank loves it. He get so excited and his coat is so soft! Not sure if that is due to the American Journey or the additional food he gets during the day. Yogurt in the morning on top of his American Journey and homemade pureed food at dinner time on top. I will continue to purchase this for Tank and considering changing my other boys to American Journey, also.

    • July 1, 2017 / 11:37 am

Sheila – Tank’s diet sounds AMAZING!! I know Lyla’s coat became softer, silkier, and shiner as well as her skin was less flakey after starting her on American Journey. Wow I sounded like a shampoo commercial there haha!
It could be all three things you are feeding him too – I mean the yogurt is super good for dogs and the pureed dinner sounds yum too!
Keep up the great work – you make an excellent pet parent!
Let me know how the switch for the other two dogs go please.
