Disclosure: As part of the Chewy.com Blogger Program, and a Chewy Influencer, I received free product to facilitate this article. I am highly selective on products for my pets and I would only showcase items I trust, from brands I trust.
I will admit, I was not always the best pet parent. I have always loved animals, and have always given every animal I had tons of love, but just as with children, love is not all that animals need.
To be a great pet parent, one has to acknowledge that pets need things that love can not buy. Things that can sometimes add up to a lot of cash, especially if an emergency happens. Even when there are no emergencies, pets need regular care, just like humans.
Let’s look at some of the things a pet needs, things that will prepare you to be an excellent pet parent.

How To Be A Great Pet Parent:
I am sure my pet blogger friends could add to this list, and I hope that some of them will in the comments, however these are the most important things that come to my mind from my experience.
Most of us who would decide we want to become pet people already have plenty of love to give, but we also must consider the time we will need to devote to our furry friend. Some pets are more self care, while others, yes even cats at times, need more attention. Puppies need training, and take a lot of energy, however an older pet also may need more time and comfort. None of this however truly matters if you can not afford to first have your new friend spayed or neutered

Spaying or neutering is just one of the first veterinarian bills you will have to pay. Animals, like humans, need and deserve good care and dental care is at the top of this list. Dental problems in pets are one of the leading causes of pet health problems.
Pets also need plenty of exercises, and playtime, so having a fenced yard is nice, however not everyone has a yard for their pets, so you must consider extra time in your schedule for walking your pet, dog parks, doggie play dates, and so on.
February is National Pet Oral Health Care Month, yes I know there is a month for everything, but I rather enjoy this as it helps me stay current on blog content. It also gives me an opportunity to share with you two great dental health care treats I recently received from Chewy.com – Merrick Brush Bones, for dogs, and Purina Pro Plan Dental Crunch Snacks, for cats.
While there are a slew of dental hygiene treats for pets I can attest to the fact that our Lyla loved the Merrick Brush Bones, and all three of our picky cats absolutely love the Purina Pro Plan Dental Crunch Snacks. It is not easy to get three cats to agree on one treat product and they seem to be even more selective when it comes to dental care treats, so this for me was a huge win!
The Merrick Brush Bones are grain-free, and gluten-free. They freshen your pet’s breath plus whiten your pets teeth while they chew. Even better, the innovate shape and texture helps remove plaque and tarter build up on your pet’s teeth.
The Merrick Brush Bones come in three various sizes for your pet’s needs.
My cats went wild for the lobster and scallop flavor of the Purina Pro Plan Dental Crunch Snacks! Who could blame them? I love lobster and scallops too!
The crunchy texture helps to clean your cats teeth, freshen breath, and reduce tarter build up. They are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives too! Plus, they are in fun ball shapes that my cats seem to love to bat around, chase, conquer, then gobble up!
|It’s a Stand Off!|
Sure, great dental treats are only one small part of being a great pet parent, but providing your pet with healthy, wholesome, dental treats is the least of the expenses involved in being a great pet parent.
I feel good giving my pets healthy dental snacks. We have a timed routine in our household on when they get their dental treats. My furkids are well aware of this schedule, often reminding me when it is time for their favorite snacks.
I am sure that if you are reading this you have tons of love to give a furry friend and are ready to devote the time in raising a wonderful pet. Just keep in mind that pets need the best care you can give them, medical, dental, healthy food and treats, exercise and play time, and tons of love. If you are ready for all of that then you are prepared to be a great pet parent!
Tip: A savings account for medial emergencies may come in handy as well. Just like us humans, things can happen. You can also consider investing in pet insurance. Yes, it is a thing!
Please share this article with your children, grandchildren, friends, family, and everyone you know who is considering adopting, or buying, a pet to help them be better prepared.
My opinion: Adoption is always the best option.
