Mixing prints is not always something I was comfortable with however I have learned to enjoy it. One key factor in mixing prints is to stick to one type of print. I mixed two different types of prints. Another thing that helps when mixing prints is to stick to a color theme. Mixing prints of black and white make it a lot easier, and is a good place to begin if you are just starting to play around with mixing prints.
Below, I am wearing one of my favorites from Covered Perfectly, the Simply Gathered ruched top paired with the fun and funky Zig Zag Cascading Vest.
Covered Perfectly offers many colors, and prints in the cascading vest and they are some of my most grabbed for items in my closet. I love how there are so many ways to wear the cascading vest. It can be worn tied, tucked, draped, belted, even backwards! There are so many cool ways to style it, and I am sure there are still more ways to discover! Personally I love wearing it long and draped, I just love the way it flows.
The ruched Simply Gathered top is the cutest! I love how you can rearrange and adjust the tucks and puckers to give me the most slimming effect. When I arrange it, it actually stays in place too! This top is absolutely gorgeous in the deep wine color, but you can also get it in black, and royal blue. Imagine how slimming the black would look. I need to get myself one in every color!
The Simply Gathered top is one you can wear anywhere, from the office to simply running errands. Cute with jeans, and perfect under a blazer paired with a skirt for office ready fashion. Perfect for those days you do not have time to run home to change before heading out to hang with friends, or a date night. Just take a pair of jeans, or a different skirt with you, do a quick change, and your ready to go.
I also love the neckline on this top because it dips just low enough to show off a shorter necklace, but also looks great with a long necklace as well. I am wearing both and the neckline allows them both to be seen.
Mixing prints is such a fun adventure. I am not saying I am great at it, but I have been making effort and getting more comfortable finding what works. I am simply in love with the zig zag print Cascading Vest because I have found so many things to pair it with that are already in my closet, and so many other patterns it looks smashing with. My husband loved this outfit, saying it was fun but also glamorous! Wow! I was not expecting that, I was not aware the word glamorous was in his vocabulary. I must be rubbing off on him.
Usually I do a lot of editing with my styling, putting everything on that I think I would like to wear, layering, adding accessories, and so on. Then I remove items that are just “too much” or complicate the look.
When styling for this photo shoot I decided to go all out, having a go big or go home philosophy. When mixing patterns you want to stand out, you want to be noticed, so editing was not necessary, but I still selected accessories that looked great with the outfit by mixing in some pieces that had patterns that were complimentary to the patterns on the clothing.
I went for black leggings to help give a boost to the pattern of the skirt, my pale winter legs would do it no justice, and I really do not wear panty hose anymore. Below I did a quick tie to the vest just to show you what that looks like.
The zig zag pattern is uniform covering the entire vest. Below is a photo of the back for you.
My size zip, pointed toe, ankle boots are by Dolce Vita, my skirt is by Sanctuary, the wine colored barrel bag is by Olivia & Joy.
The top is as attention grabbing without the vest as it is with it. I just love how it fits, showing off all the right curves, and hiding a few you may not want to show. The fabric is super comfortable and has a nice stretch.
The Simply Gathered top features 3/4 sleeves, ruched sides and the fabric is 96% MicroModal® and 4% Spandex. It is conveniently machine washable on a delicate cycle. Hang or dry flat. Also it is made in the USA!
So just what is MicroModal? It’s actually very special! The fibers used to make this fabric are from European beachwood and is natural product produced in Austria! It is super breathable and is described as the softest fabric in the world and is so gentle it feels like a second skin!
I usually wear a medium in Covered Perfectly clothing but this time I went for a size small. For one reason I wanted to see how their smalls fit me in comparison to the medium. I also wanted this top to fit a little tighter to really get the benefit of the slimming ruching on the sides! I think it worked out well and the small fits better than the mediums! I love it when I can size down!
I have written in the past about how looking good and feeling good are connected. There is so much truth to it. Looking good is not nearly as important as good health, but it sure helps you feel better, inside and out, when you make the effort to try new things, like mixing prints, and it works out for you.
I encourage everyone to give print mixing a try if you have not yet ventured into it. It takes a little time to get the hang of it, but it’s so much fun. The younger ladies are doing it and I promise you I have seen so majorly out of the box prints mixed and matched, so you really can’t make a fashion faux pas, even if you tried! Sure the younger ladies may be able to pull off more out of the box styles with their social groups than we midlife women can, but I would rather be a leader than a follower when it comes to fashion. I want to inspire all of you to give it a go and do the same! Why let the younger ladies have all the fun? Us midlife ladies have the benefit of claiming menopause brain if we totally blow it! Let the young women try to use that excuse!
All joking aside, I took my fun, funky look a step further. You be the judge. I threw a hounds-tooth cape into the mix!
This gorgeous cape is from Ya, Los Angeles.
Personally, I love it! These three patterns just seem to work. It may be too much for some, but on a good day, when I am already feeling great, and want to stand out in a crowd, this is what I would wear.
I am also loving how everything together layers. Granted I am wearing three layers but I love how the vest drapes below the cape, and how when the cape opens up you get a peek at the cute vest. It’s all just so flowing, and feminine, yet strong, and capable. Haha get it CAPEable.
Oh and speaking of hounds-tooth, if you hurry, you may be able to grab up one of Covered Perfectly’s last hounds-tooth pencil skirts! I wanted one but they no longer have them in medium, but if you are size small, or large, you are in luck! Grab one if you can because it would also look great with this top, and cascading vest and they are almost all gone!
