I like to refer to this blog post as "How Lyla Got Her 'Tude Back" 'tude as in attitude! You know to us humans, seven years is nothing more than the blink of an eye but for dogs, its a long time. Seven years for our pets just goes so fast and when I first noticed the grey fur developing on Lyla is when I realized she was in fact becoming a senior dog.
As our dogs get older we have to think more of their needs, because they do change, just as our dogs behavior changes as they get older.
According to experts at Purina Pro Plan, around age seven, the glucose metabolism in a dog’s brain begins to change, which can affect memory, learning, awareness or decision making. We were seeing these changes in our furbaby Lyla for awhile before switching her over to Purina Pro Plan® BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+®.
When we heard that Purina Pro Plan discovered a way to promote alertness and mental sharpness in dogs 7+ through nutrition and had introduced Purina Pro Plan® BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+® formulas, we had to give it a try!
Some of you may recall my previous article about ProPlan Bright Mind where I shared some photos of Lyla in her not so playful and alert days. Since our switch, Lyla is so playful, has her spark back, and is even being ornery again, something we have always loved about her!
One thing we had noticed prior to putting Lyla on this special nutrition for the aging pet is that she was not barking at people going by like she used to. Although at times her incessant barking got on our nerves a bit, it was so much a part of who she was that when she stopped doing it we were worried. She was just disinterested in the mailman, others walking their dogs outside, squirrels, birds and everything else she used to get so revved up about. After she started eating Purina ProPlan Bright Mind dry food her alertness came back, and she was acting like herself again. So, now I appreciate her growls and barks so much more than I had before! Every time she starts to bark at a passer by I smile now instead of getting frustrated. I have Purina ProPlan to thank for that.
Oh and another cool thing is that Purina ProPlan now has wet food too which is Lyla's preference. I snapped the image below while I was at PetSmart the other day so that I could show you what to look for. This was a display on an end-cap but there is a huge section of Purina ProPlan BrightMind products in the dog food isle at PetSmart as well.
If you want to transition your senior dog over to Purina ProPlan Bright Mind and get all these healthy benefits for your pet then here is a little info to help you get started:
OBSERVE YOUR 7+ DOG BEFORE STARTING THE FOOD
As you get ready to transition your dog to Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+, jot down some changes you’ve seen as he/she has gotten older. Think about how he/she interacted and engaged with you and others when he/she was younger. How he/she played in the yard or acted on a walk. Has it changed at all?
TRANSITION FROM YOUR CURRENT FOOD
Transition your dog to Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+from his/her current food over the course of 7-10 days, per the instructions on the back panel of the package. Continue to observe your dog, capture video and write down his/her behavior and activities at this time.
