Disclaimer: I was sent two bottles of Leaf Vodka in exchange for my opinion and review.
So I was very lucky to be selected to try, and review Leaf Vodka.
Leaf Vodka presents us with two wonderful options. One which is a savory type vodka, and one which is a sweeter vodka. Yes there are differences in vodka, and not just quality, but flavor as well. It all begins with the water!
Global Spirits, one of the industry’s leading international vodka producers, will enter the U.S. market by unveiling LEAF Vodka, sourced from unique waters around the country. Two varieties will be introduced in the line—one made from Alaskan Glacial water, which lends a pure, smooth taste with a hint of sweetness. The other, made from Rocky Mountain mineral water, provides richness and complexity, offering a warm and savory impression. The water sources give LEAF Vodkas their signature tastes.
Before I get into my thoughts on Leaf Vodka let’s learn a little bit about it from the company:
From Leaf Vodka
Water is the spirit of life. Without it, we would not exist.Water is the spirit of vodka. There’s something in it that shapes the taste, character, and finish of the world’s favorite spirit. That’s why we search the world to find only the best.
Four glaciers slowly wind their way down the misty mountains to Alaska’s Blue Lake with water as pure as nature. So pure it doesn’t need filtering. It’s one of the most unique waters of the world, and it forms and defines the foundation of Vodka’s Alaskan Glacial Water.
The glacier water is a gift we don’t take lightly. We marry it to the highest quality organic wheat, then distilled five times to round out the finish and character. The result is a smooth, pure taste with an agreeable hint of sweetness.
After long years of trickling down through the stony layers of the Rocky Mountains, the extraordinary mineral water is a pristine testament to nature’s bounty. And LEAF Vodka’s Rocky Mountain Mineral Water.
The unique mineral properties of the spring water infuse flavor and complexity after distillation while maintaining the pure essence of its source. This is one bold vodka. The complex flavor notes offer a warm, savory impression that lingers perfectly into a silky finish.
I have a difficult time picking a favorite because each vodka from Leaf offers something different. I made myself a Bloody Mary with the Leaf Rocky Mountain Vodka. I made myself a Sunset Screwdriver with the Alaskan Leaf Vodka. I also tried a tiny sip of each straight. Both offer distinct and different tastes on the palette. Both equally good.
I will say that the Alaskan version has a stronger aroma and while it is the sweeter of the two versions I also found a sweetness in the Rocky Mountain version as well. Now I am not one for drinking vodka straight, but some of my tasting notes are as follows:
Alaskan Leaf Vodka:
Mouthfeel: Medium “burn”
Flavors: Spicy, Minty, Sweet, Peppery, Sugary, Rock Mineral, Grapefruit
Remember this is the savory version of the two.
Rocky Mountain Leaf Vodka:
Mouthfeel: Mild “burn”
Flavors: Soft, Sweet, Candy, Creamy, Chewy, Plum
This is the sweeter version of the two.
Both versions have many dimensions. When doing reviews on liquor, tea, food, anything that involves one’s palette I like to mention that we all have our own tastebuds, and looking up other reviews, I find that there are so many different ways people describe things. One thing resonates however, people seem to love Leaf Vodka! I know that I love both versions plus I love that Leaf Vodka is ORGANIC!
Over the past few nights I have sipped on a Sunset Screwdriver, again using the Alaskan Leaf Vodka, and I am sure I will get in the mood for Bloody Mary’s sooner or later, although I did enjoy the one I had for reviewing purposes. I would love to share with you now what exactly a Sunset Screwdriver is:
1 and 1/4 fluid ounce Alaskan Water Leaf Vodka
1 fluid ounce strawberry margarita or daiquiri cocktail mix
4 fluid ounce orange juice
1/2 fluid ounce lime juice
Pour over ice, mix, enjoy!
Overall, Leaf Vodka is one of the best, if not the best vodka I have tried in a very long time. Since it is the first organic vodka I have tried, it has become my favorite. Thanks to leaf I now have a better understanding of how water quality effects our alcohol, which makes perfect sense, because I have known for years how quality water makes our coffee and tea better! I now also have a deeper appreciation for vodka, and how different one can taste from another.
