Organic Shea Butter from Beauty By Shea Review

I received the most lovely Shea Butter from Beauty By Shea via Tomoson today. My son and I both love Shea Butter and all of the benefits it has to offer, aside from the fact that a lot of our store bought lotions and skin care items are filled with nasty little things we really should not be using on our bodies! I won't go into the politics of all that, however let me just tell you that there is nothing bad for you in Shea Butter! In fact, many products you find in the store, as well as the high end stuff have Shea Butter as an ingredient, but that begs to question, If these companies are using Shea Butter as an ingredient, and the Shea Butter itself is so good for you, why do we need all of these other ingredients? Well again, I won't go into the politics of all that but let me tell you - you do not need those other ingredients! All you have to do is take a very small amount, about the size of a dime, let it melt or soften between your hands and spread on your body or in your hair. I know you hear "a little goes a long way" with products often, but with this it is very true! As you work with it you will learn how much your skin requires and you can adjust as needed. So this product, in its natural state is wonderful, But, with that said, I did make some lovely lotion and I did use a few other things to mix it up but as you will see later in this post, all of it is perfectly natural, and healthy!

I want to share with you what Beauty By Shea says about their Shea Butter:

So yes, you can apply it directly to your skin, but you can also use it in a lot of homemade goodies as well, and that is what I did! I made my own Shea Butter Lotion and it was simple to do and actually rather fun! It has been a while since I have done any blending with essential oils so I grabbed a couple of favorites and begin my mad scientist blending, without any harmful substances like chemicals! Yuck chemicals! I know, I know, a lot of our beauty items have tons of chemicals in them and I do like to err to the more natural side when I can, but I do not always do it. Still, when you can get something in your hands that is so organic, so natural, why not use it!

So here are some of my photos form my blending experience:

I am not going to really give you a recipe here and for that I am sorry but I never really measure things anymore. Who am I kidding, I have never measured anything at all which is one reason I do not bake, I love to cook, but baking forget about it, that is my daughter's thing. I eyeball everything and have been blending with essential oils for so long I don't "need" to measure. I promise you though you can goggle "Shea Butter Lotion Recipes" easily and find a lot of good ones out there. The main thing you need to know is you probably already have everything you need in your kitchen to make a good Shea Butter Lotion anyway. Some Olive Oil, hot water, a fork or something to stir with, a bowl, and the one thing you may not have is an essential oil to scent the lotion with. You can use other means of scenting but I like to keep natural things natural so adding perfume is not really the best way to to. You may have some peppermint oil, or almond oil, or vanilla though! There are so many various ways to make this lotion, oh honey is another amazing thing to add to it! Lavender, chamomile, really the ways to blend this are endless! A lovely Lavender and Chamomile lotion would be lovely for bed time! Very relaxing!

Note: Edited post to include this site with a wonderful recipe and ideas Wellness Mama

I elected to make my son's favorite scent, with some Nag Champa oil I had laying around even though I had started out planning to make a lovely Ylang Ylang and Sandalwood scent for myself. I can do that later.

And here is my finished (almost) product:

It could still set up a little more. It was a lot prettier before I stuck my finger in it and messed it up but I could not resist, it is SO creamy! Shea Butter loves your skin, and your skin loves Shea Butter, so why not let them just be together?

Now, speaking of Shea Butter ... I have tried several brands, my son has brought several brands home. This brand stacks up very good, in fact better in comparison to others. I have found others to be gritty, or dry, or just too hard to work with. This Shea is very creamy and smooth and easy to work with, although all Shea butter is very thick and takes a little effort to blend, this is on the softer side of all those I have tired. Just know, Shea Butter is messy, and if you are already like myself, you may want some plastic gloves to work with. Personally, I like to get my hands messy, which is why I poked my Shea before it was all set up and it was simply calling for me to touch it!

The main thing is do not let Shea butter scare you. When you get it you may wonder what on earth it is, how to use it, what it should feel like, smell like, etc ... just do a little research online which will also lead you to all the big bad scary reasons why you should be using Shea and not that "other stuff" you buy at the store. Okay, I admit, I am a sucker as well for something that smells pretty in a pretty package but on the other hand I also respect, and appreciate the beautiful things nature has to offer us and this is one of them! Besides you can add your own natural scents to this Shea! You can make your own pretty packing, and with the holidays upon us, its time to start making those homemade gifts for your loved ones! What better way to say I love you than giving a gift that won't give them cancer or some other scary disease that you can get from the chemicals in store bought products. Yeah I know I know I will be buying them myself, and using cosmetics that have those bad things in them too, but once in a while I like to get back to my earthbound roots of making things from our wonderful mother earth.

Note: If you are allergic to nuts you should not use this product.
