We all have those days of just not knowing what to wear. We look with an empty stare into our closet. We know we have things but we just don’t don’t feel inspired. Well wonder no more. Give some of these ideas a try the next time you are at a loss for fashion inspiration!
Shoes – Select a pair of shoes that speaks to you first then build your clothing items for that day around them. We all have a favorite pair of shoes, maybe they are your most comfortable pair, or maybe they are those really expensive pumps you rarely wear, or perhaps they are shoes that only match a couple of outfits that you bought on a lark because they had such funky colors! Whatever you pick will then lead you on to what clothing to select.
Bra – Yes, try picking out your bra first! I know it may sound strange, but sometimes specific undergarments make an outfit. Let your undies lead the way, after all you are already lost, what can really go wrong? If you selected a push up then go for something that shows a little cleavage, if you picked the old standby, you know that one that is worn out and you should probably toss, but you simply can’t because it is oh so comfortable? Well then pair that with a classic tee and a scarf, or blazer. Even a tee can be made to look office worthy if the right accessories are selected.
Accessory – Speaking of accessories, why not select your jewelry for the day first? Coordinate matching accessories then find the perfect outfit to match! Maybe you have a great pair of earrings and a necklace that you have not worn in ages, put them on then decide what will really make them pop! Perhaps something understated if your jewelry are statement pieces, or something more elaborate if your jewelry is simple. Maybe you have a scarf you picked up and have never worn. When you are at a loss for what to wear is the perfect time to pull that out and match it to a nice top!
Mood – Consider what mood you are in. Is it a good one? Maybe not if you are having a difficult time deciding what to wear, but maybe consider the mood you need to be in that day. Are you having an important high power meeting with the big boss? Let the need to feel in control and balanced guide you. Are you having lunch with an old friend? Consider how you want to present yourself to them. Or go for broke and just wear your zaniest outfit, who knows what they will think but you will have them thinking for sure! If you are feeling playful then pick out your most playful outfit. Feeling focused, or just beed to be? Go for colors like yellow and orange. Bright colors stimulate the thought process and focus. Speaking of fashion and colors – I will be doing a follow up blog at a later time on when to wear which colors.
Plans for the Day or Night – If you are at a total loss on what to wear a simply directive is to consider your plans for the day. Never go to the mall or to the grocery store in your tight fitting sandals, even though you may be around the hub of fashion, the last thing you want to do is wear something cumbersome getting in and out of in the dressing room, and you don’t want your feet sore! Maybe you have to be at work all day but have a date later in the evening. Wear something that is convertible from day to night, such as a black dress and take with you a chance of shoes, jewelry, and maybe a little clutch instead of using your daily tote bag. Add a little extra lip color and you are good to go!
What are you Hungry For – Okay this one is a bit bizarre but earlier I wrote an article on if fashion influences food. Well, why not let food influence fashion!? If you are craving a big pile of BBQ ribs why not put on a nice pair of jeans, some stylish boots, (no they do not have to be cowboy boots but they could be) and tie your hair back in a pony tail. Then you are ready to throw back some ribs! Feeling a bit like having some fijitas? Why not put on that cute spanish inspired shift dress?
Granted not everyone has everything hanging in their closet to fit every hunger, mood, or at times even our plans. There are always times we are just stuck because we don’t have the right thing to wear. However, in most cases using little tricks like this can help us get out of our fashion slump! Give it a try, see how it works for you. It can be fun, and is a creative way to challenge ourselves from wearing the same things over and over.
